Our Mission is to RESCUE, REHABILITATE AND EDUCATE until every dog has a loving and safe place to call home. We believe we can, and we will see an end to dog homelessness and abuse through legislative efforts, hard work and strategic partnerships near and far. We will never give up and we will never back down from the needs of all heartbeats because every life matters.

Our Happy Clients!

From the moment we applied on the Maltese Heart website, the process was seamless. The team was incredibly communicative, and when our puppy, Bella, arrived at our doorstep in Sydney, she was in immaculate health—bright-eyed, playful, and already vet-checked. The travel crate was spotless, and she came with all her documents in a folder. We were amazed at the stress-free experience. Maltese Heart isn't just a rescue; they're professional matchmakers who truly care. We recommend them to everyone!

As a first-time dog owner, I was nervous about adopting online. Maltese Heart put all my fears to rest. Their website was transparent, and their support was constant. My Alfie was delivered right to my door in Melbourne. The courier was gentle and professional, and Alfie was clearly well-loved—flawless coat, energetic, and with a clean bill of health from their vet. The care they took in his transport was evident. I will shout from the rooftops that Maltese Heart is the absolute best. Don't look anywhere else

Our experience with Maltese Heart was exceptional. We live in a regional area in Queensland and were concerned about delivery. They coordinated everything perfectly. Our little Lulu arrived at our doorstep after a smooth journey, happy, healthy, and ready to play. She had her vaccination record, microchip details, and a starter kit. The health and temperament guarantees gave us such peace of mind. Their process is thorough, ethical, and loving. We are their biggest fans and recommend them without hesitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

We generally recommend sterilisation between 5 to 6 months of age, before the first heat cycle in females. This timing maximizes health benefits. However, the best age can vary based on your individual puppy’s health and development. We will discuss the ideal timeline during your consultation.

Yes, when proper protocols are followed. At Maltese Heart, safety is our top priority. We perform pre-anesthetic bloodwork to check organ function, use anesthetic protocols tailored for toy breeds, and provide continuous monitoring by a trained technician throughout the procedure and recovery.

Your Maltese will retain their loving, playful personality. The procedure may reduce hormone driven behaviors such as roaming, mounting, or anxiety during heat cycles. It often leads to a calmer, more focused, and equally affectionate companion.

Beyond preventative care, key areas are dental health (they are prone to plaque), patellar luxation (knee issues), and regular grooming to prevent mats. Our wellness plans are designed to proactively monitor and manage these breed-specific concerns throughout your dog’s life.

No, tear staining is primarily related to genetics, eye shape, and diet, not reproductive hormones. Sterilisation will not directly impact tear stains. We are happy to discuss our grooming and care tips for managing this common Maltese trait during your visit.

Recovery is typically 10-14 days. Your Maltese will need a quiet space, restricted activity (no jumping or playing), and close monitoring of the incision site. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions and an Elizabethan collar (cone) to prevent licking. Most Maltese bounce back quickly with their normal energy.

Maltese are known for their gentle and affectionate nature. They can do very well with gentle, older children and other pets when properly socialized. Due to their small size, supervision is crucial to prevent accidental injury. We recommend always teaching children how to interact safely with a small dog.

Daily brushing with a high-quality pin brush is essential. We recommend regular professional grooming every 4-6 weeks, using gentle, whitening shampoos. Keeping the hair around the eyes and mouth trimmed and using a filtered water bowl can also help minimize staining.
