Foster care is one of the most important functions of any rescue. These homes serve as “half-way houses” for our little dogs. They are especially valuable when a dog comes from a place where they have been neglected, abused or denied much human contact. These dogs may be sick and/or fearful, and they may need personal care and attention to recover from their illnesses and stressful life before they are ready to be placed.

Every dog that comes to Maltese Heart receives a thorough veterinary check-up. Initially, some need immediate medical care and immunizations, while others primarily need time to adjust to family life and other pets. Consequently, these dogs are not ready for immediate placement into a permanent home. Therefore, a foster family provides a warm, loving, temporary home for them while they recover from illness, adjust to the outside world, or simply wait until they are ready for adoption.

Fostering can vary from short and easy to long and challenging. However, it is always rewarding to watch a dog regain its trust and personality. Ultimately, you provide the essential foundation for its bright future.
